Thiruvananthapuram is the capital city of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram was known as Trivandrum till 1991. The Kerala government in 1991 officially reinstated its original name - Thiruvananthapuram. Located at the southwestern tip of India, Thiruvananthapuram district is bounded by the Arabian Sea on the west and Tamil Nadu on the east. "Abode of Lord Ananta" is what Thiruvananthapuram means in Sanskrit. Ananta is the cosmic serpent, with a thousand heads, on whom the Hindu God Vishnu reclines. The Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple devoted to lord Vishnu or Padmanabha is an iconic landmark of Thiruvananthapuram city.
The southern most extremity, Parassala, is 56 km away from Kanyakumari, the "land's end of India".Thiruvananthapuram city, built on seven hills, has today grown a sprawling metropolis. But the city still retains her past glory and charm, and in spite of the frenetic pace of modern life, perhaps it is the most sedate of the big cities of the State.
The economy of Thiruvananthapuram district mostly consists of Tourism and Leisure, Information Technology, Agriculture and Education. Agriculture has been the primary occupation of the people of the district. The entire tourism package of the state such as hill stations, back waters, beaches, lagoons, and wild life sanctuaries are present in the district. Foreign tourists are flocking to Thiruvananthapuram, a major destination for chartered flights to India for Medical tourism
